A report highlights the Middle East's lag in reducing smoking rates, with nearly two million lives potentially saved by 2065 through switching to less harmful nicotine products. Analyzing seven nations, including Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, it reveals that tobacco use among 61 million adults leads to about 384,000 premature deaths annually. Despite forecasts indicating a slight decline in smoking rates, tobacco-related deaths are expected to rise without intervention, including cases of cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Antismoking efforts have stalled in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, but alternatives like nicotine patches and electrical devices offer potential aids for quitting. While long-term studies on tobacco harm reduction products are limited, research on biomarkers shows promise. Derek Yach, the lead author, emphasizes the urgent need for embracing harm reduction, cessation, and improved treatment to enhance public health in the region.  #dubai #dubainews
